Roof It Forward - Keeping Critters at Bay: Effective Methods to Safeguard Your Roof

June 28, 2023

There are plenty of critters that live outside that could enjoy a nice, cozy space on your roof. Whether it's rats, squirrels, bats, birds, or mice, they could choose to build a nest on your roof. Once a nest is built, more critters could come and find shelter on your roof. These animals can then end up causing additional damage inside your home over time. To prevent any damage, use these tips to keep critters at bay and safeguard your roof.

  1. Trim Back Your Trees

Some animals like squirrels could be making it to your roof by crossing across a tree branch that is hanging over your roof. By removing any tree branches that hang over our roof, you will cut off the access that some of these critters have to your home.

  1. Make Sure Your Shingles Are In Place

If any shingles are out of place, animals can easily borough their way into your attic. Once a hole is created, other damage could occur, such as water damage, from your attic being opened up to the elements. By keeping an eye out for any missing or loose shingles, you can quickly have them replaced or repaired before an animal can make its way into your home.

  1. Keep Your Gutters Clean

Gutters are also attractive spots for critters to nest. With leaves and other debris already there, birds especially can quickly put together a nest within your gutter. The next step from your gutters is into your home. By regularly cleaning out your gutters, you can deter critters from nesting in your gutters in the first place.

  1. Install Gutter Guards

Even with empty gutters, animals could also be inclined to nest within your gutters or use them as a way to travel to your roof. A way to prevent this is by installing gutter guards. Gutter guards will cover your gutters to prevent critters from getting in but still allow your gutters to function properly by moving rainwater from your roof to the ground.

  1. Keep Trash Away

Trash and food waste that is open and available can quickly attract animals looking for a food supply. Be sure to keep your trash contained within bags inside of a garbage can and away from your home. This will help prevent luring animals into your home.

  1. Have Routine Inspections

There could be openings or other areas of your roof that are allowing animals to get in. While there are some roofing issues that you could see from the ground, there are many that can only be seen up close. Enlisting the help of a roofing professional will allow you to have someone safely go up on the roof with the training to spot any areas where critters could have caused damage. Be sure to get an inspection at least once a year so you can catch any problems early before the damage is too extensive.
